Organic food
The word Organic describes food that has been grown without the use of synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides, herbicides and fungicides . Only natural pest control measures and natural fertilizers are used by organic farmers, so organic foods are highly nutritious and taste rich and natural. Excellent for your health, Organic food also aids the preservation of the environment. Organic farming practice ensures that rivers and streams around the properties are not polluted with chemicals and the soil remains healthy. Farmers plant more trees to conserve the land and they work towards building a natural balanced ecosystem while caring for our future.
Avoid Chemical Estrogens
Environmental estrogens (xenoestrogens) are man made chemical that mimic our natural estrogen hormones. These estrogenic chemicals are now ubiquitous in the environment. Such pesticides as DDT, Dioxin and Atrazine are called €˜organochlorines'. According to Greenpeace thirteen tons of chlorine are produced in North America every year. They are in ordinary household products such as detergents, bleach and surfactants, in pharmaceuticals such as birth control pills DES and cimetidine and in industrial chemicals like PCB, dioxins and benzo(a)pryrene. They also lurk in the by products of the plastic industry, in personal care products and especially in heated plastics. They contaminate our food supply through the pesticides, herbicides and fungicides such as dieldrin, and endosulfan and a myriad of others used in conventional agricultural practices. Although banned in the USA in 1974, DDT has remained in the soil and water for nearly 25 yrs. It has also been shown that DDE a breakdown product of DDT can remain in the human body for several decades. These chemicals are endocrine disrupters and as well as affecting the immune system they bind to the estrogen receptors in our bodies increasing our risk of estrogen related cancers such as breast and prostate cancer. Some of these chemicals are used industrially and workers that use these chemicals are likely to have exposure far greater than average. Try to avoid food in plastic and especially heating food in plastic. Use glass containers to store food wherever possible and seek out Biodynamic and Organic food.
While many countries have outlawed the use of some pesticides such as DDT, many have not and fruit and vegetables imported from foreign countries carry that risk. Organic and Biodynamic produce is unquestionably a safer bet.

The Protection Of Probiotics in Cultured Dairy Products
There is growing evidence that the friendly bacteria in your colon play an important role in protecting you against disease. Breast cancer is one of them. Probiotics can be found in traditionally fermented food such as yogurt, kefir, crème fraiche, and kombucha to name a few.
Estrogen is extracted from the body via the bowel where it is metabolized into one of several compounds. If you have a good supply of probiotic organisms in your colon the estrogen is metabolized into a compound called 2-hydroxyestrone a €˜good' estrogen which has been shown to inhibit the development of breast cancer. If these important bacteria are missing another compound called 16-alpha hydroxyestrone is formed instead. This is a powerful promoter of breast and other cancers and greatly increases risk. This information follows on from that of Dr. Bob Arnot in his book "The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet" and the chapter on feeding prepubescent and adolescent daughters for later breast cancer prevention. However this is not only important for girls but for boys as well as prostate cancer is also an estrogen driven cancer. This finding explains studies that show that woman who take antibiotics have a significantly higher risk of developing breast cancer. Antibiotics are notorious for killing good important colon bacteria along with the bad.
Indole-3 carbinol (from broccoli) has been shown to increase the ratio of €˜bad' (16) estrogens to €˜good' (2) estrogens thus strongly inhibiting the development of breast cancer. The 2:16 ratio is a way to determine risk based on the ratio of good to bad. A high ratio (more good and/or less of the bad) indicates protection from related cancers. A low ratio indicates there is a predominance of the carcinogenic estrogen, so the risk of cancer is increased.
